Cybersecurity once meant strong passwords, antivirus software and a well-configured firewall. That model assumed an attacker working at human speed, making human numbers of attempts. That assumption no longer holds.
What changes when attacks scale
The most immediate effect is on social engineering. Phishing used to be identifiable by clumsy phrasing and generic greetings; the tells that staff were trained to spot have largely disappeared. Messages can now be tailored per-recipient at volume.
The second effect is reconnaissance. Probing a target for misconfiguration used to take time and skill. Automating that step compresses the window between a mistake being made and it being found.
What still works
Unglamorous fundamentals have become more valuable, not less. Multi-factor authentication, least-privilege access, tested backups and rapid patching all limit the damage regardless of how the intrusion started.
Awareness training needs rewriting, though. "Look for bad spelling" is now actively misleading advice. Train people on process instead: verify unusual payment requests through a second channel, every time, no exceptions for urgency.
